Sessions and journeys

How do I start a focus session?

Choose a journey, then choose or create a mode for the work you want to do. Set a session length, add an intention if you want, and start focusing. Blocking permissions are optional; you can run a session without them.

On the current iPhone version, Focus runs your session, Journeys lets you explore destinations, Modes holds your session settings, and Progress shows your activity. Settings is the gear in Progress. Other platforms may have a different layout.

How does focused time move me along a route?

Focused time advances your marker along the selected mountain route or trail. Route estimates use typical climbing or walking times. Rest, acclimatization and waiting days are excluded from climbing estimates. Progress is saved so you can continue over several sessions.

Paused time does not count. If you end a session early, the time already focused still counts. Different journeys take different amounts of focus; a shorter trail can fit a smaller goal.

Can I switch journeys or start again?

Choose another journey between sessions. Alpine keeps progress for each journey. A session continues the journey it started on. After completing a climb, you can choose another destination or climb again.

Can I use Alpine to navigate a real mountain?

No. Terrain, routes, camps and landmarks are approximate. Some journeys have partial data. Alpine is a focus app and must not be used for outdoor navigation, route planning or safety decisions. Data credits are available in the app.

Are weather and ambient sound live recordings?

Alpine renders visual weather and lighting effects. Available weather previews are visual settings; they are not a weather forecast. Ambient sounds are bundled recordings that play on your device. You can change or turn off your mode's sound without granting microphone access.

Blocking and permissions

How does blocking work on iPhone and iPad?

Allow Screen Time access from Alpine's Settings, then edit a mode and choose apps, categories or websites in Apple's picker. You can also enter website domains. Start a session with that mode to apply its selections. Typed websites are blocked in Safari.

Screen Time authorization can require a device passcode and an iCloud sign-in. If permission was denied, use Alpine's Open Settings action or check Screen Time permissions in your device's Settings. Another app managing Screen Time can affect authorization.

Why are some selections not blocked?

Apple's system limits the number of individually selected apps and websites in a list. Alpine warns when a mode exceeds its supported list size. Choosing a category can cover multiple apps. Check that you started the intended mode and that Screen Time access is still allowed.

If a shield remains after the session ends, open Alpine so it can reconcile the session and remove an expired shield. If it persists, email us with the app version and the steps that led to it.

Why does Safari private browsing change during a session?

Apple can make Safari private browsing unavailable while a website filter is active. It becomes available again when the session's filtering ends.

How do I enable or remove blocking on Mac?

Enable Website Blocking in Alpine's Settings. Follow macOS's prompts to approve Alpine's Network Extension and content filtering in System Settings, under General, Login Items & Extensions. Administrator approval may be needed.

Add domains to a mode and start a session. Domains include their subdomains. Selected apps lose internet access and are hidden when they open; Alpine does not quit them, and offline features can still work. Some encrypted connections can hide the destination name, so website blocking coverage can vary.

To remove or reinstall the filter, end the current session first, then use Website Blocking in Alpine's Settings. A paused session is still active. If Alpine says a restart is needed, restart your Mac to complete the change.

Do scheduled sessions work when Alpine is closed?

On iPhone and iPad, an authorized schedule can apply its Screen Time blocklist at the scheduled time even when Alpine is not open. The timer and climb progress run once Alpine is open. On Mac, scheduled sessions start while Alpine is running.

Does Alpine block apps on Apple Vision Pro?

No. Apple Vision Pro supports focus sessions and mountain progress without app or website blocking. Where available, View in 3D opens a desk-sized mountain with session controls and the next waypoint. You can turn and scale it and reset its view.

What is the Phone use card?

In versions that include it, Phone use displays a Screen Time report after you allow access. The report can show today's total, the last seven days and the most-used apps. Apple's sandboxed report extension displays this information locally; Alpine's main app never receives the usage numbers.

This feature is still being prepared for release and may not be present in your build. A simulator has no real Screen Time report data. If the report is missing on your phone, check the build version and Screen Time access, then contact us if it remains unavailable.

Your data

Do I need an account, and does progress sync?

No account is needed. Sessions, modes, schedules and progress are stored on the device you use. Alpine does not currently sync between devices or through iCloud. Your device's normal backups may contain local app data.

How do I delete my data?

You can delete individual modes and schedules in Alpine. There is no account to close. On iPhone, iPad or Apple Vision Pro, delete Alpine to remove its local data.

On Mac, first remove the website filter from Alpine's Settings, then delete the app. To remove retained local data too, remove com.konstruktlabs.alpine from ~/Library/Containers and group.84PD63F63N.alpine from ~/Library/Group Containers. Manage device backups separately through Apple's controls.

We do not have a copy of your sessions or progress to restore or delete remotely. You can ask us to delete support correspondence by replying to the email thread.

How do I change notifications or report a privacy concern?

Change notification permissions in your device's Settings. Alpine's notifications are local; there is no developer-operated push notification service.

Read the Alpine privacy policy for details about local storage, Screen Time, the Mac filter and deletion. Email contact@konstruktlabs.com with a privacy question or request. Our website and contact privacy policy explains how we handle your message.
